Guide Dog 'KELLER'

Keller Certificate

This is the puppy that will be trained to become a fully fledged guide dog for the blind.

The money used by the Guide Dogs for the Blind to breed and train the puppy was presented by the 'ILKESTON LIONS CLUB'

as their beneficiary from the 2015 Ilkeston Lions Carnival fundraising. Although the carnival was cancelled due to adverse

weather conditions a promise had been made so the Lions dug into their General fundraising money in order to keep their promise.

The name Keller was chosen in memory of a lady called Helen Keller who herself was blind. She challenged the lions to be

champions of the blind and between them various treatments associated with eyesight have developed throughout the world

.One of the most common items they devised is the White Stick which is recognized by everyone.

These are a few of our hand knitted hedgehogs that were on the stand.

Unfortunately because of their popularity we sold out and a few people were disappointed that they missed them.

I can reveal that a batch are being reared at the present time and should be grown up enough to have at the Carnival on 13th. June

It was a very good evening with sixty people attending, of which nine had travelled from our twin club in Brescia, Italy.

A significant part of the evening was the  presentation of a cheque for 3500.00 to THE LAURA CENTRE,

who deal with families when a child dies or is bereaved.

PRESENTATIONRachel Cliffe, a Macmillans Volunteer Receives a cheque for 2000.00
from Ilkeston Lions Club President Laura Rigby

Each year when the Ilkeston Lions hold the carnival in June the President nominates a charity  to receive a donation

to help them in their good work.

This year Immediate Past President Gemma Prati chose Macmillans Cancer Support during her term as President.

Unfortunately, this year the carnival had to be cancelled due to the Rutland Rec. being waterlogged by the adverse weather conditions.

The club members were distraught at the thought that Macmillans would miss out on their donation so fundraising carried on until the

money was available.

The presentation was made at the home of two of the Lions Club members.

Unfortunately, Immediate Past President Gemma became unavailableat the last minute, so the current President Laura Rigby stepped

in to present the cheque to Rachel Cliffe who is a volunteer worker for Macmillans.
